HVAC Installation Accidents

HVAC Installation Accidents

Injury From Electrical Shock During HVAC Service

A man fell while working on an HVAC unit in Wilmington, Delaware inside a building on 1201 North Orange Street shortly after 3 p.m., after what appeared to be an electrical shock, according to reporting by David Chang at local NBC10 News. The worker was found hanging from a ladder, apparently convulsing. While attempting to rescue him, the ladder was knocked over and he fell to the floor.

Apartment Under Construction Burns Due To Faulty HVAC

New Albany, Kentucky’s $26.5 million Breakwater luxury apartment complex received major damage from a fire on Friday, Feb. 24. According to the New Albany Fire Department, as reported at WDRB.com on March 2nd, they have now determined that the fire was caused by a layer of insulation around a copper line catching fire by an errant torch being operated by an hVAC installer. He initially attempted to put the fire out himself and thought he had succeeded. The fire continued to smolder and was noticed the next morning, nearly 15 hours later, by a neighbor. Most of the building will probably have to be destroyed before construction can begin again. Sadly, the building was still in the early stages of construction and a fire sprinkler system was not yet installed.

Advancements in Cooling Tower Construction Improves Pre-Assembled Types in Design, Materials and Efficiency

Prefabricated cooling towers have not generally been the design of choice in the past. Today, replacing an old cooling tower can offer options that might have been dismissed previously. The labor savings over a field erected unit are not new. However, the latest advancements in technology have helped level the ‘field’. Less lead time and build time are some obvious advantages. The latest crossflow designs and advanced drift eliminators which improve efficiency are some of the new technologies in play. Materials such as composites reinforced with fiberglass (FRP) and other new composites are also being used, allowing compact designs and weight savings over old units.

Integral basins can also play a big part in a decision on construction type. On-site construction usually requires a concrete basin as a foundation, while most factory assembled units have a self-contained basin. Some newer designs, however, can be found with no basin, allowing existing basins for field erected units to be used when updating to a newer factory assembled cooling tower systems, thus adding additional savings. Multiple cells can be mounted even be mounted on an existing basin.

More Local Regulations Considered due to Recent Legionnaires’ Outbreaks

Minnesota State Rep. Cheryl Youakim has offered up legislation earlier this month creating the formation of a “state registry of cooling towers”, which would “…would prevent more people from getting sick in an outbreak…” according to the Representative. Details are to include required registration with the state health commissioner and fines for non-compliance. Required “inspection and cleaning guidelines” will be provided along with additional monitoring requirements. Cooling towers are not currently regulated in Minnesota.

Current guidelines by The Minnesota Department of Health recommends companies develop water management programs and adhere to existing industry standards.

Back in October of 2016 after a deadly outbreak in Hopkins, Youakim had said “Everybody’s digging into this to make sure that we can not only mitigate the spread of this disease when it happens, but really look at something that can prevent it from happening,” according to Nate Leding of local ABC affiliate Channel 5.

Altitude Valve

Replace Altitude Valves with Modern Controllers

Replace Altitude Valves with Modern Controllers

Many ground level or elevated water storage systems use what is known as an Altitude Valve. These valves close at a preset high-level to prevent overflow of water in a ground storage tank or reservoir, opening to refill the water in the tank or reservoir as the level lowers. In crude systems they are reliable and effective.

Modern water storage requirements are not usually well served by such stand-alone devices though.

Fire Safety Water Holding Tanks

For fire protection, a much more effective, less temperamental and less expensive solution is an electronically operated system that connects to automated building management systems, has alarms, or even redundant switching and alarms.

FPT50 ControllerA better solution for Fire Safety holding tank systems, and a replacement for them, is the Waterline Controls WLC FPT-50. This Fire Service Water Tank Level Control with high and low alarms gives you modern, state of the art control, visible and audible alarms, and peace of mind.

Our systems come with a modern, intrinsically safe, electronic sensors. Our systems connects to a BAS or building management system for many modern code requirements, or just logical safety precautions.

Geenbuild 2015 Report

Geenbuild 2015 Report

greenbuild-2015
The 2015 Greenbuild International Conference and Expo was bigger and better than ever. Filmmaker James Cameron was in attendance and was the headline speaker. An increase in attendance this year, to 19,058 caused many sold out sessions. Along with James Cameron, headline speakers included Dr. Deepak Chopra and U.S. Secretary of H.U.D, Julian Castro.
Quotes from the Secretary included a powerful statement that “Green building is about reducing energy waste and water use; it’s about creating jobs and sparking economic growth; it’s also about protecting the health of our children for the future.”
Rick Fedrizzi, CEO and founding chairman of USGBC (U.S. Green Building Council) got a bit political, commenting on his distaste for the current Republican ‘climate denialists’, putting forth a wealth of data to prove his points (from a recent USGBC study by Booz Allen Hamilton). Fedrizzi stated “The truth is, there is a powerful, conservative pro-business case for conservation and action on climate change, and nobody understands this business case better than the people in this room.”
Some interesting fact presented by Fedrizzi included:

  • By 2018, green construction will account for more than 3.3 million U.S. jobs.
  • Green construction jobs will generate $190 billion U.S. dollars in labor earnings alone.
  • By 2020, the entire new construction market is expected to be worth $10.3 trillion dollars.
  • Close to 40 percent of that new construction will be green — almost $3.8 trillion dollars.

capitol-sm
As usual, we did get to explore the local sights. The Capitol may be covered in scaffolding, but it was still an amazing thing to behold. Washington D.C. is a place every American should try to see at least once. If there was more time and it was a bit warmer it could have been even better. There is no end to the monuments and historical places to see.

Waterline Controls Display

There was a lot of interest in our controllers and water tank level sensors. The number of installations that still use faulty mechanical float switches is amazing. The look of joy on people’s faces when we explain the accuracy of our systems, the amount of water and money they can potentially save, and the total reliability, was nice. When they realize what we offer, the most common response is something like “if we had only known earlier…”.
Our involvement with local utilities to offer incentive programs, and rebates with a comprehensive plan to monitor and reduce water usage and waste, found a lot of interested parties. Remember, get in touch if you want to work with us and your local utilities to start a program in your area.
The conference itself was jam packed and the people there were serious about protecting the environment while insuring that their businesses keep up to date and responsible…and viable. Real businessmen and women seeking economic growth and environmental responsibility at the same time is becoming a force to reckon with. We are proud to do our part, supplying advanced products to help save water, built in the USA by proud Americans.
booth-greenbuild-2015
All in all it was an enjoyable few days talking to likeminded people who can see the economic growth happening in the Green sector and want to grow business while stepping up to the plate to take responsibility for the future of our planet.

USGBC, the presenter of Greenbuild, is committed to a prosperous and sustainable future through cost‐efficient and energy‐saving green buildings.

WLC Demo

Waterline Controls Demonstration

Weftec 2015 was an amazing event. The sheer size of the hall was surpassed by the amount of displays and booths. Local sales representative Mark Albers and Waterline Controls President Bill Seneff had a busy time demonstrating and answering questions.
We had a lot of interested people from cities, counties and municipalities interested in our work with utilities in their water conservation programs. System integrators were interested the applications for the panels they build for their customers and the working display really answered many questions, particularly the sizing, and the multiple functions and options available.
A lot of new contacts were made and several prospective representatives interested in the integration possibilities for their clients were met. With all of the activities and distractions available the attention we received was very encouraging. The Weftec attendees are a well-educated and knowledgeable group of people from diverse industries around the world, there to educate, learn and see the latest advances in water technologies.
WEFTEC 2015
This years’ show was well attended and populated. The Water Environment Federation’s (WEF) 88th annual technical exhibition and conference set an all-time record, with over 25,000 in attendance and more than 1000 venders exhibits. According to WEF Executive Director Eileen O’Neill. “The record-breaking success of this year’s event is a testament to the value, diversity, and depth for which WEFTEC is known and respected.”

Water Controls for Dams

One attendee was even interested in managing a dam with a modern automatic system that would, finally, replace a manual system that requires manually opening the gates to allow water to flow during rain storms…so someone did not need to go out on the peer and turn the valves! Luckily, we have the system for most any application.

Dinner!
Every night ended with dinner at Tuscany Italian on Taylor Street in Chicago, which is the place to go when in Chicago. See you at next years’ event.
In November we will be in attendance at This year’s “Monumental Green Event”, Greenbuild Expo 2015, to be held in Washington D.C. on November 18-20 at the Washington Convention Center. Join Waterline Controls and many thousands of other people from around the world who agree that green building is a good idea…and good for business.
